Medically speaking, all the surgical interventions involving the modification of the shape or the bridge or angle of the nose are done through the surgery known as “rhinoplasty”. In simple terms, it is called “nose job”.

It is considered one of the most common types of plastic surgery. Patients turn to rhinoplasty primarily because of these main reasons.

- Change in the size of the nose

- Change in the angle of their nose

- Raising and straightening the nose bridge

- Reducing the size of nostrils

Before undergoing the rhinoplasty, it is important to make sure and wait till the bone of the nose is fully developed. This concerns the teenagers wishing to improve their appearance by reshaping their nose.

However, if the main purpose of the rhinoplasty is to improve breathing difficulties or anything like that, rhinoplasty can be performed even at a young age.

Next thing one must keep in mind is the possible risks that rhinoplasty carry.

There might be different types of complications or risks such as infection, bleeding.

Thus, you may want to ensure that you have sufficient amount of the consultation with the plastic surgeon.

Prior to the surgery, during the consultation, you must inform the doctor about all the medications you take in the present time and let him know about your medical history. You should also avoid taking aspirin because that can cause excessive bleeding.

One more important thing is about smoking. If you smoke, it is better to quit smoking before and after the surgery since it will disturb the healing and recovery process after the rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty surgery is done in an outpatient facility. The surgeon may use either local or general anesthesia depending on the difficulty of the surgery.

Also, a medication can also be administered through the IV line which may make you feel a bit unconscious half-asleep, but you will still be awake.

Then the doctor makes an incision where it is needed. When it comes the recovery from the rhinoplasty, you will be given instructions on how to care at home.

Right after the surgery, you will be provided a metal splint the main function of which is to fix the modified shape of the nose and retain it until it fully heals.

After some time, if you feel okay, you can leave hospital. However, we highly recommend that you have someone on the day of the surgery who can drive you home.

There might be bleeding and swelling, but these are the common features of not only rhinoplasty but also of other surgeries.

Before removing stitches, you must visit the clinic or hospital for dressings. If the stitches are absorbable, there is no need to visit the hospital to have them removed. Following post-surgery instructions will increase the effect of the surgery.

After the rhinoplasty, you must avoid running or other physical exercises, blowing and rubbing or touching the nose, vigorous tooth cleaning, pulling clothes over your head and making many facial expressions.
