An upturned nose is a type of nose with a tip pointing upward. Sometimes, an upturned nose can also be called a piggy nose or pixie nose.

When the tip of the nose becomes upturned, it can make the nose look short and nostrils too visible.

We all have different types of noses, and the upturned nose can be also be caused because of many factors, including genetics and injuries.

From a medical viewpoint, an upturned nose is not a real concern. However, if one is not satisfied with the shape of the nose, then there are surgical and non-surgical ways to correct it.

A surgical way to correct an upturned nose is through the nose surgery called “rhinoplasty." This method can involve open or closed rhinoplasty.

Whether the surgery is done through the open or closed rhinoplasty must be discussed and determined by the plastic surgeon.

What the surgery involves is the separation of the tip of the nose and cartilage. The surgeon then reshapes the tip of the nose.

If the tip of the nose is slightly upturned, then the cartilage from the ears can be used to lengthen it.

In contrast, if the nose tip is angled upward too much, then the surgeon might use the nasal septum cartilage to lengthen the tip of the nose. The surgery is done under general and local anesthesia.

The surgery lasts around 2 hours. The stitches are removed after 7 days after the surgery. Potential swelling should subside after 1~2 weeks.
