Blephraroptosis or ptosis is the condition in which the upper eyelids drop over the eyes. To better understand this term, imagine the situation when we feel drowsy or do not get enough sleep and our eyes start to droop making us look very tired.

This condition is in medical terms called as ptosis. Sometime there are cases when only one eye can be affected by the ptosis (unilateral ptosis) and sometimes both eyes can droop (bilateral ptosis).

Before discussing the treatment of the blepharoptosis, it is equally important to know its causes. Well, there might different factors causing the ptosis.

Among them are injuries, aging or some other medical mostly eye diseases. There are even many cases of congenital ptosis when people have it since the birth.

It may seem less serious condition, but if not treated on time, it can put a person at risk by blocking his or her pupil through which light enters eye.

Inside our upper eyelids there is a muscle responsible for raising the upper eyelids. As we age, that muscle also loses its ability to support and lift the eyelids. When it stretches, the eyelids fall because there is no enough strength to keep eyelids up.

Therefore, ptosis is common among adults. How to treat the ptosis? The treatment of ptosis depends on the severity of it.

If it eyes do not droop too much, there might be nothing required to do about that. However, if it seriously blocks the eyes so that one has difficulties with vision, then a plastic surgery can be the solution for that.

To correct the ptosis, the surgeon makes an incision in the crease of the upper eyelid skin, opens it and tightens the muscles responsible for raising the upper eyelids or reattaches them to the upper eyelids by using the stitches.

Blepharoptosis is not a very dangerous condition for the health, but if you have problems seeing or improve the outlook, you might want to seek for professional help and discuss all the details regarding the ptosis correction surgery and blepharoplasty.
