Mastopexy (Breast Lift)

Surgery Editor Nick Posting update : 2021.02.19

Mastopexy is the medical terms for describing the breast lift surgery. The main purpose of this surgery is to reshape and lift the saggy or drooping breasts.

Mainly breasts lose its firmness and elasticity because of the aging process, breastfeeding, gaining or losing weight.

Sometime, most patients wish to have the breast augmentation at the same time as breast lift.

However, that must be determined after the consultation with the plastic surgeon. If the breasts are not too saggy, the surgeon can just only make an incision in the areola and then removes the excess skin and then stitches the incisions with sutures or with surgical adhesives.

How much lift is needed depends on the size, shape of the breast of each individual.

Before the surgery, when you come for consultation, the doctor will ask all the medical history, medications that you usually take and check if you have any allergy reaction to certain drugs. You can also be asked to provide results of certain medical examinations prior to the surgery.

And the most important thing that patients must pay attention is smoking and blood-thinning medications. If you smoke and take blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, you are required to stop them 4 weeks before the surgery.

Because smoking can slow down the post-surgery recovery process and can lead even to serious complications.

The surgery is done under the general anesthesia which means that you will be asleep during the entire surgery process.

Then, the doctor makes an incision around the areola and depending on the condition of the breasts and how much they droop he might remove also excess skin, lift and then reshape the breasts by moving the areola into the right position that will match the size and shape of the new breasts.

Incisions are then closed with stitches or sutures.

After the surgery, you might feel discomfort and soreness in the breasts. To alleviate that, you will be given pain-relieving medications or ice packs.

Until the time the breasts fully recover, you must wear special non-wire bra for at least 4 weeks and at most 6 months after the surgery. You also need to ensure that you sleep on your back supported by high pillows so that your chest is raised.

Redness, swelling and all the pain should subside in several weeks.

Therefore, for the sake of better and faster recovery, you must avoid all sorts of physical exercises, sports activities, sauna, hot bathing.
