What is Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Laser Editor Nick Posting update : 2021.02.09

Laser skin resurfacing is a type of dermatological procedure that improves the texture and appearance of the skin through the use of different lasers.

Before the treatment, one should know the difference between ablative and non-ablative lasers. When you have a consultation with a doctor, he or she may recommend one of these two types of lasers, either ablative or non-ablative.

Such lasers as Carbon dioxide (CO2) or Erbium are types of ablative lasers. Their main functions may differ. However, both remove the outer layer of the skin to treat acne scars, hyperpigmentation, warts, and deep and fine wrinkles.

Unlike ablative lasers, non-ablative lasers do not remove the outside skin layers. Non-ablative lasers are applied to improve more of acne-related concerns.

Now that we are aware of the difference between ablative and non-ablative lasers, we can discuss the effects and target skin concerns of laser skin resurfacing.

They include the appearance of spots due to aging, scars (surgical), acne scars, fine and deep lines, wrinkles on the eye corners, loose and saggy skin, warts, enlarged pores alongside uneven skin tone and texture.

Laser skin resurfacing targets the outer layer of this skin and reaches the dermis too. It allows for more collagen production.

When new collagen fibers are produced, the skin becomes smoother, firmer, and more elastic to the touch. First, a numbing cream is topically applied to the targeted area, and then the skin is cleansed to get rid of dirt and excessive oil. Then, the doctor starts applying the laser by moving it slowly around the target area.

In the end, transparent tape or wraps are put on the skin to protect it from external pollutants and dirt.
