Lower blepharoplasty or lower eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that improves the sagging, wrinkled and baggy eyelids under the eyes.
Usually, most people undergo lower eyelid surgery in combination with such surgeries as facelift, brow lift, or upper blepharoplasty.
The objective is to the correction of the wrinkles under the eye and removing of excess fat along with drooping skin.
Since we lose our skin elasticity as we age, it is inevitable for the skin not to sag due to the elasticity loss.
When elasticity is lost, eyelids drop and look puffy or baggy, as a result. Therefore, people undergo lower eyelid surgery to improve these signs and look younger.
What does the lower eyelid surgery involve? The doctor will first ask about your medical history and list of medications you are currently taking. Then, he marks target areas for incisions.
After making small incisions into the lower eyelid, he removes the excess fat and skin and sutures the skin back.
The surgery is under local anesthesia, which means that your eyes will be number, but you cannot feel anything that the doctor does.
The reason why the doctor uses local anesthesia than general is that he can test eye muscles and eyelids easily when the person is awake.
The surgery lasts for about one hour to one hour 30 min. The surgeon removes the stitches on the 5th day after the surgery.
However, you must visit the clinic for a check-up every other day until the stitch out.
After the surgery, it is mandatory to follow after-care instructions, including sleeping on an elevated pillow, protecting eyes from any kinds of injuries, and avoiding strenuous physical exercises for 2~3 weeks after the stitch removal.
