Acne scar lasers are applied to reduce the appearance of post-acne scars on the skin. Acne scar removal lasers use the application of light to destroy the scar tissue. By this, lasers stimulate new cell growth and improve acne scars.
There are three main types of laser procedures commonly used in treating acne scars. They are ablative laser resurfacing, non-ablative laser resurfacing, and fractionated laser treatment.
How are they different? Ablative laser resurfacing entails removing the top layer of the skin in the scarring area. Such lasers as CO2 lasers fall into the category of ablative lasers.
Unlike ablative lasers, Non-ablative resurfacing does not remove the layer of the skin. It activates collagen production and new cell growth.
Fractional lasers such as Fraxel remove the dark spots or pigmentation below the top skin layer. By stimulating the underneath tissue, pigmentation scars and spots will improve.
Before having one of these lasers, one must consult with a dermatologist or a board-certified plastic surgeon. The doctor will analyze the skin type, choose the right laser, and consult which laser will work best for you.
What is more important is that lasers do not entirely remove the scar. They will help improve them and make them less visible.
Therefore, having realistic expectations is as essential as undergoing cosmetic treatment.
