Drooping eyelids: Causes and treatment

Surgery Editor Nick Posting update : 2021.06.03

Drooping eyelids, also called ptosis can be present from birth or acquired due to trauma or the aging process. Depending on how much the eyelids drop and block the pupil, sometimes vision can also be affected.

Drooping eyelids are most common among older people because of the aging process. There is a levator muscle in the eyelids, which is in charge of lifting the eyelids.

With the time, levator muscle becomes weaker and loses its ability and strength. That is why eyelids fall.

How to treat drooping eyelids? If the eyelids do not block the vision too much and have any severe effects, then it is okay to leave drooping eyelids as they are.

However, when one wants to improve excessive drooping, the plastic surgeon might recommend ptosis correction surgery.

Ptosis correction surgery is done to lift and tighten the weak levator muscle. After making an incision, the doctor fixes the eyelids in the right position.

Therefore, they will not droop or cause discomfort or vision obstruction anymore. After the surgery, the eyes will look bigger, and pupils will become more clear and more distinct.
