Surgery Editor Nick Posting update : 2021.10.26

Otoplasty or ear plastic surgery is a cosmetic procedure that improves and modifies the shape and position of the ears. People mostly undergo otoplasty to repair the prominent ears. It is a condition when ears stick out from the head.

Before the surgery, you must inform the surgeon about your medical history, including your current condition and list of medications.

Secondly, the doctor will examine the ears: the size, shape, and degree of how much they stick out.

Lastly, you must discuss your expectations with the plastic surgeon.

It is also vital to stop taking blood-thinning medications a week or two before the surgery. During the surgery, the doctor applies intravenous sedation or local anesthesia to numb the target surgery site.

The doctor makes an incision at the back of the ears and removes the excess cartilage or skin. After that, he fixes the incision with stitches by folding the cartilage into the correct position. The surgery lasts around 2 hours.

You will be prescribed anti-inflammatory and swelling-relieving medications after the surgery. Until the stitches are taken out, you must sleep on a high pillow on your back. You should avoid strenuous exercises or sports activities, sauna, smoking for 2~3 weeks after stitch removal.

It is also not allowed to touch or rub the ears after the surgery and during the recovery period.
