What should you know about Liposuction?

Surgery Editor Nick Posting update : 2021.02.09

Liposuction is one of the most popular surgical procedures. It removes excess deposits of fat from particular parts of the body.

Common target areas for liposuction are thighs, lower and upper abdomen, arms, neck, back, and buttocks. Usually, people turn to liposuction because exercise and diet could not help them get rid of the extra fat.

However, one must always remember that liposuction is not a weight-loss surgery. After the surgery, you will not lose weight, but the fat will decrease significantly.

How is the liposuction surgery performed? As in most surgeries, liposuction is also conducted under anesthesia general (IV) and local.

It means that you will not feel pain during the operation. First, you will need to consult with a doctor about which area of your body you would like to have liposuction.

Then the doctor will explain all the details of the surgery, pre and post-surgery guidelines, potential side effects such as bruising, swelling, and feeling of numbness on the surgery site. All these symptoms go away after a while.

Before the surgery, one must inform the doctor about the medications that you usually take and the history of illness. Doing so can help the doctor decide and recommend the right treatment and prevent any possible complications or side effects.

During the surgery, the doctor makes a 5cm incision, removes the fat, and then delicately sutures the surgery area.

Depending on the body part, the surgery may last from 1~2 hours. The full recovery is in 2 weeks after the surgery.

After the liposuction surgery, you will be given a special compression garment which you must wear for at least 3- months and at most 6 -months.

A high-frequency wave treatment is recommended to accelerate the recovery process. Besides, doing physical exercises will also redouble the effect of the surgery, making it last longer.

However, it is worth mentioning that you can start exercising only after 2~3 weeks after the stitches removal.
